The castle's history begins in 1323 when the Lithuanian Prince Gediminas ordered the construction of a fortress that could protect the population from Crusader raids and ensure the safety of Lida - an important trade and cultural center of the principality. That is why the building is called Gediminas's Castle.

Lida Castle

The construction of the citadel took several years. Initially, it was a fortified structure that housed the prince's residence. Later, an Orthodox church was built on the territory, as well as residential and economic objects. Thus, the castle served as a safe haven for the inhabitants of Lida and its surroundings during enemy raids. It was a structure in the form of an irregular quadrilateral with corner towers. Brick combined with large boulders served as the construction material.

In the mid-17th century, the fortress fell under the assault of the Moscow Principality's troops, and at the start of the 18th century, Swedish troops twice ravaged the fortification, succeeding in destroying both towers. After the uprising of Tadeusz Kościuszko in 1794, the castle walls were further destroyed.

Lida Castle

In 1891, following a severe fire in Lida, authorities decided to use the fortification materials to rebuild the city. The southwestern part of the tower and a portion of the wall were dismantled by the townspeople.

With the advent of Soviet power, attempts were made to restore the castle, and the object was placed under state protection. At the turn of the 20th to the 21st century, restoration work was undertaken, which enabled the partial revival of the structure. Thanks to the efforts of restorers, both towers were reconstructed, and the fortress walls were rebuilt.
