History

The history of Smolyan is very rich. There used to be the ancient Slavic settlement on the road "from the Varangians to the Greeks", and it was called Odrsk. Returning from a failed march on Polotsk, Vladimir Monomakh crushed everything in his path - most towns and villages surrendered immediately, but Odrsk resisted and was destroyed and burned. The town no longer regained its former greatness, and only four centuries later was it mentioned again in chronicles under the name of Smolyan. Already at the entrance to the village you can see the ruins of the Church of St. Mary. It rises majestically against the background of small village houses. The church has a classic outline and its size is impressive, especially when compared to the one- and two-story houses. No picture can capture all the power and beauty of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
