The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Chareya, rising amidst picturesque Belarusian landscapes, is a monument of early Baroque architecture. Its history spans over four centuries, starting from its foundation in 1601 by the Sapieha family, who owned the town of Chareya.
About the Church
This sacred place, where once stood the miraculous icon of St. Michael the Archangel, has endured through centuries of change and trials. Construction began in 1601 at the initiative of the Sapieha family. Once it was one of the first Uniate churches in Belarusian lands. Over time, the Church of St. Michael became Orthodox.
Closed in 1935 and converted into a warehouse, the church returned to its original purpose only in 1997. Since then, a phased restoration process, culminating recently, of this magnificent monument of early Baroque architecture has begun.
