The Legend of the Miraculous Icon

The story of the Zhirovichi Monastery begins with a miracle. In 1470, local shepherds discovered a glowing icon of the Mother of God on a wild shrub. Alexander Soltan, the local landowner, built the first wooden church on that site after hearing of the miracle. The icon became famous for its healing power, and soon pilgrims began arriving from across the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

What makes the icon truly unique is its miniature size (only 5.6×4.4 cm) and masterful artistry. Despite centuries of trials – fires, wars, occupations – the icon has survived and is now one of the monastery’s most revered sacred treasures.

A Harmony of Spirituality and Architecture

The Holy Assumption Zhirovichi Monastery is not only a place of worship but also an architectural gem. Its white-stone buildings blend elements of Baroque and Classicism, creating a striking balance of grace and grandeur.

The main jewel of the complex is the Assumption Cathedral, built between 1650 and 1672. Its soaring ceilings and rich frescoes inspire awe and reverence. Also on the grounds are the Church of the Annunciation, the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Church of St. George, and a unique bell tower that rises above the monastery and surrounding landscape.

Every detail here is meaningful: from delicate murals to carefully laid stone paths leading to holy springs and ancient monastic cells.

A Center of Spiritual Enlightenment

Since its foundation, the monastery has served not only as a spiritual center but also as an educational one. As early as the 17th century, it hosted one of the best printing presses and a seminary that trained clergy for all of Eastern Europe. The monks of Zhirovichi translated religious texts, created liturgical works, and advanced the arts and crafts.

Today, a theological seminary continues to operate at the monastery, preparing future priests. Thanks to this, Zhirovichi remains a living center of faith, where centuries-old traditions meet the challenges of the present day.

The Holy Spring

A special place on the monastery grounds is the holy spring, which, according to legend, emerged where the icon was found. The water is believed to have healing properties. Pilgrims and visitors come to collect it, trusting in its grace. For those who wish, there are special bathing pools to immerse themselves in the sacred water and experience a moment of spiritual connection with nature and the divine.
