Saint Andrew Bobola, a Jesuit preacher who died at the hands of the Cossacks under Bohdan Khmelnytsky in 1657 for his faith, was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.
The church was erected on the site of the former "Rodina" cinema and today represents a unique example of architectural mastery from the late 20th century. Artist Vladimir Kondrusevich painted frescoes in the newly created church, while sculptor Valerian Yanushkevich created reliefs depicting "Martyrs for the Faith" on the entrance door.
The main architectural feature of the church is the five-tier bell tower, elegantly crowned with a slanted shatyor (a type of steep multisloped roof). The Sunday school is also located on the church grounds.
Today, the Church of St. Andrew Bobola Parish in Polotsk stands as a distinctive monument of cult architecture from the late 20th century.
