The Church of the Divine Providence (by the way, it is sometimes also called the Church of the Heart of Jesus, as the altar features a statue of Christ with a heart in his hands) is located in the centre of agrotown Slobodka on a small hill, with the main facade facing the former market square. It replaced a previous church built in 1806, which had become unsuitable for a large Catholic parish.
From 1949 to 1953 the church was used as a granary, but was returned to the religious people after their persistent demands. It was consecrated again in 1953. The church organ was damaged in World War II and was only restored in 1999.
The church is an example of pseudo-romantic (Romanticism of XIX century) architecture. Its shape is formed by two tall towers with sharp hipped tops. The unique iron carving on the main door is a monument of monumental and decorative art and blacksmith's craftsmanship. The window apertures are decorated with stained glass windows. In the XX century local artists painted the walls inside the church, filling them with iconographic scenes and ornaments.
On your next trip to Braslav Lakes, you should include in your itinerary a visit to the Church of the Divine Providence. Its architecture and unique details, such as iron carvings and stained glass windows, will not leave you indifferent. The Church of the Heart of Jesus is not only an architectural monument. A visit to the Church of the Divine Providence will allow you to plunge into the rich history and culture of this beautiful corner of Belarus.
