Originally erected in 1781 as a cemetery church of the Epiphany Monastery, it played an important role in the life of the city in subsequent years. In 1804, the church was declared a cathedral, and in 1833, it became a parish church.
The church has experienced periods of closure and destruction. After a fire in 1900, reconstruction began, and five years later, the foundation of a new stone church was laid. However, during the Soviet period in the early 1930s and the 1960s, it faced new challenges: it was closed and used as a confectionery factory, and then destroyed by fire.
Active restoration work on the church began in 2003 with the participation of local authorities, enterprises, and ordinary people. Architect M.I. Domakurov created a new project for the church, and the lower side-alter of the church was consecrated in honor of George of Amastris.
Today, the Church of the Intercession of the Theotokos is once again open to visitors and serves as a place of spiritual inspiration and worship.
