The theatre’s history began in 1947, when the troupe of the Bobruisk Regional Drama Theatre was relocated to Grodno. Already in October, the first premiere took place – the play “Truth is Good, but Happiness is Better” based on the work by Alexander Ostrovsky. The beginning was successful and set the tone for the entire further development of the collective: a combination of classics and modernity, a constant search for new stage language, and attention to Belarusian dramaturgy.

In different decades, theatre directors shaped the artistic course according to the era. In the 1950s–1970s, historical and revolutionary plays and productions based on works of contemporary Soviet playwrights held an important place. At the same time, the theatre actively worked with classical material – Chekhov, Gorky, Tolstoy, Ostrovsky – which contributed to the professional growth of the troupe.
In the following decades, the repertoire expanded, introducing psychological dramas, philosophical productions, and vivid comedies. There were productions based on works by foreign authors such as Shakespeare, Goldoni, and Lope de Vega. The theatre took part in international tours and festivals, receiving high awards and national recognition.

Today, audiences can enjoy productions of various genres: from lyrical stories and satirical comedies to large-scale dramatic works and performances based on Belarusian classics.
Over the decades, dozens of outstanding artists have worked here – national and honored figures of the arts who shaped Grodno’s theatrical school. Many productions became landmark works for the Belarusian stage and were recognized with professional awards.

The theatre has always paid special attention to contemporary dramaturgy, supporting young authors and introducing new voices. This keeps the repertoire lively, relevant and appealing to audiences of different generations.
Work with children is equally important: the theatre regularly creates productions for young viewers – warm, kind, and educational performances that introduce children to the world of art.

The Grodno Regional Drama Theatre is renowned not only for its productions but also for its building. Constructed in 1984 according to the design of architect G. Machulsky, it became one of the brightest examples of late Soviet modernism in Belarus and Eastern Europe.

Its recognizable silhouette stands on a high bank of the Neman River, making the theatre clearly visible from many parts of the city. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by a three-figure sculptural composition by Lev Zilber.
Inside, the building is just as impressive: spacious foyers, a large hall with an amphitheatre and balcony for 700 seats, a small hall for 216 seats, and modern rehearsal spaces. All this turns a theatre visit into a full cultural event rather than just an evening performance.

Today, the Grodno Regional Drama Theatre is actively developing: staging new productions, participating in festivals, hosting creative meetings, touring, and continuing to shape the cultural life of the region.
The repertoire includes productions for audiences of all ages, and the theatre’s atmosphere encourages visitors to return again and again.

For tourists, the theatre offers an opportunity to experience modern Belarusian stage art, feel the spirit of the city, and discover its cultural traditions. For Grodno residents, it is one of the favorite places where you can always find a story that touches, impresses or makes you think.

The Grodno Regional Drama Theatre is not just a place where performances take place. It is a space where stories come to life, where emotions are born, and where every viewer finds something personal.
