On June 9, 2024, a unique hydraulic structure – the Augustow Canal – celebrates the 200th anniversary. By connecting the Neman and Vistula rivers, it provides access to the Baltic Sea in the north, and to the Black Sea in the south. This is one of the most amazing and picturesque locations in Belarus. The facility impresses with history and engineering genius, and also offers many opportunities for recreation and entertainment.
Construction began in 1824 and lasted almost 15 years. 29 culvert dams, 18 locks, 21 chambers, 14 bridges and 24 canal maintenance facilities were built. Its length totaled 101.2 km.
The Augustow Canal passes through the most beautiful places. No wonder it has become a tourist mecca. In 1909, the first walking excursion took place along the riverbed, and later a horse riding route opened.
During the Great Patriotic War, the canal's hydraulic structures were heavily damaged. In 2004–2006, 22 kilometers of the canal passing through the territory of Belarus were restored. The riverbed, which had not been used since the 1950s, as well as collapsed areas and hydraulic structures were restored. Some elements were restored manually, which saved authenticity and gave the facility an atmospheric feel.
On Belarusian part of the canal, 5 gateway-regulators, 2 dams and shipping gateways Nemnovo, Dombrovka and Volkushek operate. Another gateway, Kuzhinets, is located on the border of Belarus and Poland. By the way, Nemnovo is the largest gateway of the Augustow Canal: its length is 9.6 m, and the water drop reaches almost 10 m.
Today, the Augustow Canal is a historical and cultural monument included in the preliminary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After all, this is not just a waterway, it is a real work of art, surrounded by dense forests and green meadows. Here you will find unique gateways, each with its own history and architectural features. A tour along the Augustow Canal is an ideal holiday option for those who want to enjoy nature and learn more about the rich cultural heritage of Belarus.
