Exposition of the Museum, founded in 1926, is situated in the building of a former Lutheran church, built in 1888. Nowadays almost 1500 museum exhibits tell about the history of the city from the ancient times till the Great Patriotic War. The most ancient exhibit is 15 000 years old. Most of the exhibits are rarities: sword of the 10th century with the brand of the Frankish master Ul'fberta, Koz'yanki coin treasure of the 9th—10th centuries, plaster fragments with frescoes from Polotsk churches, chainmail and breastplates of the 14th—16th centuries, editions of Polotsk Jesuit printing house of the 18th century, documents of the first years of Soviet government and documents from the times of Stalin repressions. Museum offers general and thematic tours, museum educational activities and temporary exhibition.
